Fall and Spring Weed Control Fall: 1) Roundup 1/2-1 pt + nonionic surfactant; 2) Paraquat 1 1/2 pt. + nonionic surfactant; 3) NDSU research indicates that Roundup at 1/2-2/3 pt. + 1/4 pt. Banvel + nonionic surfactant has provided good knockdown of both broadleaf and grassy weeds. Herbicides can be applied pre-plant or pre-emerge when weeds are present. When winter annual weeds are a problem, (yield losses probable or spring control difficult), low labeled herbicides rates control them in the fall. Research has indicated slight reduction of winter hardiness may occur. Depending on winter temperature and snow cover, winter survival may be reduced. Spring: Winter wheat and especially winter rye provide more competition for weeds than spring wheat and durum. If weeds become a problem, most herbicides approved for spring wheat are also cleared for winter wheat. Winter annual weeds need to be controlled in April or early May when in the rosette stage of growth.
