Winter Wheat Preparation of Fallow

Research and farmer experience has shown that flax seeded in narrow strips of 36 to 60 inches wide provides the best snow trapping and the least moisture competition with the winter wheat crop. Set the drill at a high flax seeding rate of 40-60 lb/a and tape enough drill spouts shut to obtain desired spacing. Wider flax strips of 20 feet or more are often seeded but will protect only about one-half of the strip unless snow cover is above average. Seed flax strips about August 1 but no later than August 15.
