What's a Good Flax Stand

Flax has about 88,000 seeds per pound and at a seeding rate of 42 lbs. per acre 85 seeds per square foot are planted. Seeding rates higher than 42 lbs. should be used when soil moisture or other conditions may lower emergence. A stand of 60-70 plants per square foot should be the goal. A firm seedbed is important for flax germination. Seeding deeper than 1 inches will result in fewer seedlings. Avoid dry pulverized soils as crusting can occur easily on these sites. Uniform stands of 30-40 seedlings per square foot can produce good yields and should not be re-seeded.
