Consider Seed Treatments as Insurance

Consider seed treatments of small grains when seed is scabby or black-pointed, if loose smut or covered smut is a potential threat, if common root rot has been a problem in the field, and if continuous cropping is being used.

Planting of scabby or black-pointed small grain seeds may result in seedling blight. Protectant fungicides, such as maneb or mancozeb products give good to excellent control of these seedling blights.  If a field has a history of wireworms, or if a producer is planting into sod, then treatment for wireworm control is recommended.

Protectant fungicides give good to excellent control of covered smuts and bunt. They do not control loose smut. A combination of carboxin plus a protectant such as captan, maneb, or thiram, gives excellent control of these seedling blights plus excellent control of covered smuts, loose smuts and bunts. This combination, with a wider spectrum of activity, but costs a little bit more. Difenconazale seed treatment is available for control of seedling diseases and smuts in wheat, but is not labeled for barley. Tebulconozole seed treatments also control seedling disease and smut and is labeled for wheat and barley.
