Seed Treatment to Prevent Loose Smut

All currently-grown barley varieties are susceptible to loose smut. Fungicide seed treatment is generally economical if the barley seed contains one percent or greater loose smut infection. Treatment is not recommended when the embryo test for barley shows less than one percent infection.

The embryo test is not available for wheat loose smut. Carboxin containing products, Dividend or Raxil  seed treatment is recommended for certified wheat seed or wheat seed from fields known to have loose smut last year.
